Is there a more appropriate mascot for a team in the state than Hopkins boys’ basketball and its Royals moniker? For if a program truly can be called royalty it’s at Hopkins under longtime coach Ken Novak, Jr. Over the past 20 years, Hopkins has a record of 529-48 and has advanced to 12 state tournaments, winning six titles -- all in the last 11 years.

That’s a true dynasty.

Again this winter, Novak has Hopkins knocking on the door of a state title as it currently is ranked No. 2 behind defending champion Apple Valley.

Another program that has been making a dent in Hopkins’ run is Eden Prairie and coach David Flom, currently ranked No. 5. But the ultimate goal still remains elusive. The Eagles lost to Hopkins in the 2011 championship game and 2012 third-place game.

This Tuesday night’s regular season rematch is our top game of the week of Jan. 20-26, 2014.
