Coach Bob McDonald, 80, plans to retire after this season, his 53rd with Chisholm and 59th overall. He is poised to become only the 16th boys’ basketball coach in national high school history to win 1,000 games.

Second among active coaches: McDonald trails only Bob Hurley of St. Anthony High School of Jersey City, N.J.

Minnesota legend: McDonald has been the state’s winningest coach for 20 years, surpassing then-retired Edina boys’ hockey coach Willard Ikola with his 617th victory in 1993.

Five decades at state: His teams have reached the state tournament in 1973, ’74, ’75, ’81, ’82, ’91, ’92, ’95, 2008, ’09, and ’11. He won state championships in 1973, 1975 and 1991.
