Former Edgerton boys’ basketball coach Richie Olson died Thursday from injuries suffered when he fell last weekend. Olson, who also coached basketball and served as the athletic director in Virginia, guided the Flying Dutchmen to one of the most memorable state championships in 1960.

Tiny Edgerton, population of 900 then, beat Austin 72-61 to win the one-class state tournament at Williams Arena before a record crowd of 19,018. It upset powerhouse and No. 1-ranked Richfield 63-60 in overtime in the state semifinals.

Olson was 23 years old at the time of the improbable run, and in his first year of coaching at Edgerton. It also was the school’s first appearance in the state tournament.

Funeral arrangements for Olson are pending.
