1Gophers ties

Annandale boys’ basketball assistant coach Dave Greve is the father-in law of Gophers and Lynx basketball great Lindsay Whalen. Greve’s son, Ben, helped the Gophers golf team win the 2002 NCAA championship. Cardinals senior Brett Ahsenmacher and junior Matt Miller have surpassed 1,000 career points.

2Sons rise in Hayfield

Tradition runs deep in Hayfield, about 100 miles southeast of Minneapolis. Four starters, plus the sixth man, are sons of former Hayfield players. Senior center Brady Kramer joins his cousins, former players Tanner and Tony, in the 1,000-career point club. Assistant coach David Johnson is the school’s career leading scorer with 2,468 career points. Superintendent Ron Evjen was a standout on Hayfield’s 1967 and 1968 state tournament teams.

3Ranking news

Minnehaha Academy, ranked sixth in the final Minnesota Basketball News poll, is the highest-ranking Class 2A team in the state tournament. No. 9 Byron is making its state tournament debut, while No. 10 Litchfield returns after taking second place last March. Rankings aside, Hayfield, Perham and Redwood Valley earned the privilege by beating at least one of the top-five ranked teams head-to-head in the section playoffs.
