A tale of two halves took place in Browerville last Tuesday night during a Prairie Conference match-up between the Browerville Tigers and the Knights from West Central Area

A tale of two halves took place in Browerville last Tuesday night during a Prairie Conference match-up between the Browerville Tigers and the Knights from West Central Area. When the game ended, Browerville had escaped with a 43 – 38 win.

The first half did not go well for the Tigers on the offensive end as they managed only two field goals and also went 3 for 6 from the free throw line. The poor shooting came from all areas of the court, including the first three attempts from under the basket.  Kyle Petermeier made 1 or 2 from the line for the Tigers first point 3 ½ minutes into the game.  Four minutes later he again scored and the score was 3 to 7, WCA.  Browerville's defense allowed them to remain in the game.  Brad Dreher made 1 of 2 free throws and the score was then 4 to 10. 14 minutes into the game, Browerville scored its second basket, and was only down 9 points. Mitch Heid added a free throw to cut it to 8 points, but WCA scored the final basket of the half, and the Tigers went to the locker room to regroup with the score at 7 to 17, WCA.

“The first half was ugly,” Coach Schueller said.  “We kept it within reach by playing solid defense.  We were able to get plenty of good looks, we simply were not making them.”

Browerville came out the second half and started hitting some of the same shots missed in the first half. The Tigers scored 5 points before WCA hit one from 3-point range.  The Tigers then scored the next 7 points to pull within 1 point, 19 – 20. With 6 ½ minutes to play, Bryce Irsfeld scored on a 3-point shot to again make it a 1 point game.   He then stole a pass and converted the layup on the other end to give Browerville their first lead of the game, 28 – 27. Trent Johnson extended the lead to four points with another 3-point shot. With just under 3 minutes to go, Heid gave Browerville a 9 point lead with the teams fourth 3-pointer of the half.

Kyle Petermeier led all scorers with 21 points, including 17 in the second half. He ended with a double-double by pulling down 10 rebounds. Bryce Irsfeld hit a couple of big second half shots and ended with 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Trent Johnson hit 2 second half 3-pointers for 6 points and also had 2 steals and 2 assists.

Browerville 56, Upsala 63

A filled gymnasium decked out in purple t-shirts for Coaches vs Cancer were entertained with a great game between two state ranked teams.  The Upsala Cardinals came in undefeated and ranked 4th in the polls.  Browerville was ranked 7th in the polls and had just one loss at the hands of the Cardinals earlier in the season.

Upsala opened the game quickly by scoring off the jump ball and again after stealing the inbound pass. Christian Pekarek was fouled on the second basket and made the free throw for a sudden 5 – 0 lead. Browerville then got on the scoreboard with a Cody Hansmeyer basket.  Brad Dreher pulled the Tigers within 1 less than a minute later. After a basket by Bryce Irsfeld and back-to-back three-pointers by Mitchell Heid and Trent Johnson, the Tigers took the lead at 12 to 8.

Browerville used an aggressive, yet patient, offense to get some good looks at the basket.  Defensively they matched up with Upsala trying to take them out of their rhythm.
Heid came up with a steal, scored and was fouled.  After the made free throw, the Tigers had a seven point lead.  Upsala worked their way to get within 3 points when Dreher stepped outside the arc for a three-pointer giving Browerville a 22 – 16 lead. Pekarek followed with a 3-pointer for Upsala. The Tigers couldn't find an answer to slowing Pekarek down in the first half as he scored 19 points.

Browerville's Trent Johnson scored 12 first half points behind four 3-pointers, including three in-a-row to end the half. Dylan Zimmerman and Pekarek scored the last 17 points for Upsala and got the Cardinals within one, 33 – 32, by halftime.

Browerville maintained a small lead early in the second half and led 41 – 36 with 10 ½ minutes remaining.  Over the next 4 minutes, the Tigers offense hit a wall.  The Tigers had a couple of good looks, but the ball didn't want to go in.

Upsala's Andy Nelson tied the game at 41 with a 3-pointer. A few minutes later, Matt Abeler gave the Cardinals a 46 to 41 lead with another Upsala 3-pointer. The Tigers Petermeier scored a basket before the Cardinals Pekarek again connected from three point range.

Browerville again got it going and pulled within one point with 4 minutes remaining, 48 – 49. The Cardinals were again able to pull away as the Tigers needed to foul to get the ball back. Pekarek made 5 of 6 free throws at the end of the game and led the Cardinals to a win by scoring 33 points.

Trent Johnson led the Tigers with 16 points.  Brad Dreher scored 13 and had 5 rebounds.  Mitchell Heid finished the game with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 8 assists.  Kyle Petermeier and Bryce Irsfeld scored 7 and 6 points, respectively.  Petermeier also had 7 rebounds and 5 assists.

Browerville will travel to Menahga Monday, and then Swanville on Tuesday.  St. John's will come to Browerville on Thursday.
