Millers surge past Hudson in second half, 64-50

Minneapolis Washburn came out of intermission with a 12-3 run to break open a close game and beat Hudson (WI), 64-50 in the Breakdown Tip Off Classic at Minnetonka High School. Evan Shepherd led the way for the Millers with 20 points, balancing out a big effort from Hudson's Alex Herink (26 points).

Shepherd opened the scoring in the first half with a trey and he ended it the same way to give Washburn a 31-26 halftime lead. He led Washburn with 10 points in the first half. Quinton Garvis put on a shake-and-bake crossover in the lane, drawing the defender off Shepherd. Garvis found him for three in the final seconds.

Garvis was a one-man press break for Washburn, using his speed and handle to effectively neutralize any pressure Hudson applied. His penetration and no-look pass to George Clark for a layup in the second half was a thing of beauty.

Herink was effective for Hudson. With Washburn in front 27-21 with four minutes left in the first half, Herink drained a three and then cut hard to the rim for a two to keep the Raiders close. The smooth 6-foot-6 junior forward had 16 first-half points.

But Hudson couldn't overcome the Millers' second-half streak. Hudson couldn't get within single digits the remainder of the game.
