Preview

The host school (Minnetonka) takes on high-energy Robbinsdale Cooper in the nightcap of the Breakdown Tip Off Classic. Fans will get a chance to see Wisconsin bound Riley Dearring go against junior star Rashad Vaughn, but don't think this is a one on one affair.

Both teams have a lot of tough, electric, fresh players stepping into roles of graduated players and both teams are expected to have good years. Minnetonka is entering its third year with Tom Dasovich as head coach, so the program should be full of players he's been able to mold for a couple years. At Cooper, Steve Burton takes over for Dave Johnson, which means the navy blue and orange crew will have the energy of new leadership but freshness of a new style of play.

Key Matchup

Riley Dearring vs Rashad Vaughn: This is the second ranked senior in state against the second ranked junior. Riley is headed to Wisconsin, Rashad can choose just about whatever school in the nation he wants to go to next season. They played together the past two years with Net Gain Sports and now they go head to head for the first time on the wing. Expect both to score in many ways.

Prediction

Why Minnetonka will win:

  • The Skippers will have a deeper and more talented roster that will tire the Hawks and ultimately allow them to pull away.
  • Minnetonka returns three starters from last year and has a five man senior starting line-up. That type of veteran experience playing together for four years now (which includes a lot of summer ball both high school and AAU) counts for a lot on both ends of the floor. Seniors Malcolm Moore, Grant Kellogg, Riley Dearring, Brendan Taylor, Mike Fernando, and Bremiah Snyder have put in a lot of time together.

Why Robbinsdale Cooper will win:

  • This is an athletic and motivated team that has several quick wings and guards. The pressure they exhibit could result in an up and down frantic game that they want to play. Leroy Taylor and Billy Kellogg are nice guards.
  • Rashad Vaughn is as talented as they come. It's not crazy to think that if Tyus Jones wasn't in the same class people would be talking about Rashad in the “best ever in Minnesota” conversation. He's rated 10th in the nation and you can count on one hand how many Minnesota kids have been rated that highly.

Prediction: Minnetonka
