Joey King

Eastview senior forward Joey King would like nothing better than to go out as a state champion. The Drake recruit will lead the Lightning into the Class 4A boys' basketball state tournament starting Wednesday at the Target center.

The 6-9 King averages 23.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.

Here is a closer look at King:

The best movie I've seen in the last year? "Law Abiding Citizen."

Three songs I never skip on my iPod are ... "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC; "Mighty To Save" by Hillsong; and anything by Rage Against the Machine.

Three words or phrases my friends or teammates might use to describe me? Athlete; funny; confident.

What is your favorite meal before a game? Subway or Jimmy John's.

How do you balance school and sports during the year? I make good use of my time in class to complete my school work. I don't like having homework during the season.

At my first varsity practice, I felt ... very prepared and excited to play high school basketball.

What did you work on prior to the season? My overall strength, athleticism and toughness.

What is your most memorable moment as a high school athlete? Having the opportunity to play in the state tournament my sophomore year. It gives me experience coming into my senior year.

What were your goals entering the season? Hanging banners -- academic, conference and section championships. State championship.

Who is your school's biggest rival, and why? Apple Valley. They are right across town, and we don't get along very well.

All three games you played against Apple Valley this year were in packed gyms. What did you think about the atmosphere? Those are three of my favorite games of all time. Both teams were well-supported, and it felt like the fans were right on the court with you.

When you played them in the section final the temperature outside was approaching 80 and the temperature in the gym was in the 90s. What was that like? For a high school game that was rare. It was pretty extreme conditions.

When did you work up a sweat before that matchup? Walking past the people that were standing in line to get tickets. That was even hotter than the gym.

Who is your favorite college or pro sports team and why? I love watching my Drake Bulldogs play along with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Kevin Durant can score the ball from anywhere, and it's fun to watch.

Do you have a secret talent - and if so, what is it? My secret talent is playing Guitar Hero. Throughout middle school I would play for hours, and it just stuck with me.

In 10 years, I hope I'm ... married, graduated from Drake University, and playing professional basketball.

What is the best sports advice you ever received? "Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard." -- Kevin Durant
