Benilde rolls past Waconia

A 17-0 run by the top-ranked Class 3A boys' basketball team proved to be too much for the Wildcats in the Eden Prairie tournament.

Benilde runs away from Waconia

BENILDE-ST. MARGARET'S 86, WACONIA 63: The Class 3A, No. 1 Red Knights flung open the flood gates in the second half, distancing itself with a 17-0 run against Wildcats in first-round action Tuesday in the Eden Prairie tournament. Senior guard Isaiah Zierden paced Benilde-St. Margaret's with a team-high 28 points, while backcourt senior mate Sanjay Lumpkin added 26 points.

OSSEO 82, ROCHESTER JOHN MARSHALL 34: The Class 4A, No. 3-ranked Orioles were clicking on all cylinders, jumping out to a 45-17 halftime lead by creating 21 turnovers by John Marshall. Junior guard Bridge Tusler led all scorers with 25 points.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

SOUTH ST. PAUL 51, PRESCOTT (WIS.) 35: Makenzie Garibay etched her place in South St. Paul school history. The senior guard led the Packers with 23 points, becoming the all-time leading scorer in girls' program history.

CHISAGO LAKES 64, PARK 55: Senior guard Whitney Tinjum flexed her scoring prowess at the South St. Paul Holiday Classic, pacing the Wildcats with 37 points.

IRONDALE 79, ST. PAUL HUMBOLDT 54: The Knights found little resistance in their opening round win of the Irondale tournament. Junior forward Bethany Daiker paced Irondale with 20 points, while junior Deanna Bland and senior Jana Norgren added 17 and 16 points, respectively. Junior forward Danielle Hernandez led the Hawks with 23 points.

BOYS' HOCKEY

ST. PAUL JOHNSON 7, HOPKINS 6: St. Paul Johnson might have been caught watching the scoreboard -- the Governors surrendered three goals during a six-minute stretch late in the third period -- but rebounded for the victory with 50 seconds to play. Senior forward Gage Grace averted catastrophe on the game-winning goal, assisted by fellow seniors Mark Terry and Ronald Reese.

GIRLS' HOCKEY

HOLY FAMILY/WACONIA 4, RIVER LAKES 3 (OT): The Fire was determined and resilient in earning the overtime victory. Sophomore Jamie Kichler and junior JC Reinke rallied Holy Family with a goal each in the third period, forcing overtime. Freshman Abby Hanscom put an end to things shortly thereafter, nailing the game-winner just 22 seconds in overtime on the power play.

LAKEVILLE NORTH 1, PARK 0: Junior Savannah Krueger broke a scoreless affair through the game's first 47 minutes with her goal with only 2 minutes, 48 seconds to play. Junior goalie Cassie Alexander recorded 18 saves in the shutout victory.

• CHAMPLIN PARK 3, BUFFALO 2: An offensive attack sprung forth from both squads following two scoreless periods. The Rebels were led by junior forward Hailey Adair with two goals and one assist. Sophomore Maggie Cragg broke a 2-2 tie with her power play goal with 5 minutes, 2 seconds to play.
