West Court recaps and results from our Dec. 10 Breakdown Tip Off Classic

Minnetonka 59, Buffalo 47

Minnetonka erased a six-point halftime deficit with a 31-9 run after intermission, racing past Buffalo in the finale of the Breakdown Tip Off Classic at Minnetonka, 59-47. Latrell Love led all scorers with 23 points for Minnetonka, while Joe Risinger added 12. Peter Cassady (11) and Ethan Freer (10) scored in double-figures for the Bison.

Come back later tonight for a full recap from our own Ryan James.

Hopkins 74, Cretin-Derham Hall 45

Hopkins staged a big second-half surge to roll past Cretin-Derham Hall, 74-45 at the Breakdown Tip Off Classic at Minnetonka. The Royals outscored the Raiders by 20 after intermission, 39-19.

The Raiders were short one of their best players (Taylor Montero) but they weren’t short on effort out the gate. With a freshman starting (Sam Neumann) for only the second time in recent memory the Raiders were competitive early. Sam’s older brother CJ, headed to Wofford next year, scored two field goals while Sam hit a trey.

The competitive balance of the Royals was to much though as their arsenal of long, competitive, disciplined, and athletic players collectively wore down the Raiders, Andre McDonald knocked down five first half field goals including two treys, and the Royals took an 11 point lead into the half.

In the second half Hopkins went to a full court press that gradually produced turnovers. Siyani Chambers and Jake Wright hit triples and the lead was built to 49-32. Chambers hit another jumper followed by a five point run from Nick Jorgenson and the game was essentially over with a half of the second half to go at 60-36. Hopkins won 74-45.

Score by half: Hopkins 35-39--74, Cretin-Derham Hall 26-19--45

Hopkins: McDonald 16, S. Chambers 14, D. Martin 12, Sharp 12, K. Chambers 7, Jorgenson 6, J. Davis 4, Wright 3.

Cretin-Derham Hall: C. Neumann 15, S. Neumann 11, Linehan 4, Momon-Johnson 3, Rhoda 2, Tillman 2, McMahon 2, Springer 2.

DeLaSalle 64, Robbinsdale Cooper 61

A 28-0 run on either side of halftime proved to be just enough as DeLaSalle edged Robbinsdale Cooper, 64-61 at the Breakdown Tip Off Classic at Minnetonka.

This was one of those games where one opponent (Cooper) was quickly written off because the other team has many more well-known players (DeLaSalle). However, with Tubby Smith and two other Gopher coaches in the stands watching, Rashad Vaughn scored nine quick points and Cooper built a 17-10 lead. Three minutes later Rashad Vaughn stepped in front of a pass meant for Reid Travis, pushed the ball ahead, and went on a one man fast break rattling the rim with a one-handed jam. A minute later Cooper senior Eric Brown nailed to corner treys and the Hawks had a 29-17 lead.

It didn’t take long for DeLaSalle to come back as Jarvis Johnson hit a three, Reid Travis scored a lay-in, Jake Svanoe hit a corner three, and Luke Scott knocked down a couple treys for a 14-0 run. It was a half worth of work for Cooper to go up a dozen but it took only four minutes for that lead to disappear.

DeLaSalle built their lead to 18 but the Cooper dynamic dup (Brown and Vaughn) picked up the energy. Vaughn drilled a three followed by a Brown trey, free throws, a nasty one handed slam from Brown, and another Vaughan triple. DeLaSalle’s lead was cut to four points and the packed crowd all seemed to be behind the Hawks.

With three minutes to go Vaughn made two key defensive plays that brought Cooper with two points. First Rashad jumped a passing lane for a dunk and then he took a charge in transition while getting steamrolled. However, a couple strong inside buckets from Reid Travis and jumpers from Luke Scott and Shawn Fitzgibbons kept the Islanders ahead. Vaughn made a three late to bring Cooper within a bucket but DeLaSalle made their free throws and took home a three point victory.

DeLaSalle gave Cooper some runs but had way to much balance for Cooper to overcome with six different guys providing three or more field goals.

Score by half: Robbinsdale Cooper 29-32--61, DeLaSalle 33-31--64

Robbinsdale Cooper: Vaughn 30, Brown 16, Lingren 4, Kellogg 4, Taylor 3, McCullough 2, Shelby 2.

DeLaSalle: Scott 13, Travis 12, Fitzgibbons 11, Johnson 8, Savone 8, Moore 8, Bonds 2, Sheperd 2.

Eastview 61, Benilde-St. Margaret's 54

Darin Haugh scored a game-high 22 points and Joey King added 19 as Eastview held off Benilde-St. Margaret's, 61-54 in a heated game at the Breakdown Tip off Classic in Minnetonka.

Coming down the stretch Isaiah Zierden had scored 16 points for Benilde-St. Margaret’s and Joey King had 15 for Eastview. The stars were getting it done but it was role guys making big plays too. Red Knight guard Isaiah Gray took two early charges (plus scored four field goals) and BSM scored on consecutive possessions immediately after those charges both times. On the other side of things Darin Haugh, who continues to be underappreciated statewide, was making his usual plays defensively but also totaled 14 points scoring on a mix of deep jumpers and difficult pull-ups. So with eight minutes to go the game was tied at 46.

From there a loose ball occurred with players from both teams scrapping on the floor. Tussling for the ball turned into shoving and smack talking. A pair of technical fouls were called and then the intensity really picked up. Fresh off a baseline in-bounds play the Lightning got the ball to Ben “The Beast” Oberfeld who scored with Red Knights stabbing at him from all over. The Lightning took a 53-48 lead with five minutes left.

Eastview then went into a clock-consuming spread offense that ran a minute off the clock before Chris Narum sunk an open three in the corner. Narum was open because the constant Eastview ball movement wore out red and white defenders. Haugh then took charge handling the ball sometimes weaving through defenders and other times moving the ball out of trouble. Then with a minute to go Darin tied up Sanjay Lumpkin for a jumpball call that went Eastview’s way. Haugh went to Sanjay off a baseline in-bounds play and it was most likely the nail in BSM’s coffin. If that wasn’t the nail then it was the monster rebounds that Oberfeld grabbed in traffic after just about every Red Knight miss.

Score by half: Benilde-St. Margaret's 31-23--54, Eastview 28-33--61

Benilde-St. Margaret's: Zierden 20, Lumpkin 12, Dunn 12, Gray 8, Briggs 2.

Eastview: Haugh 22, King 19, Oberfeld 11, Narum 5, Trusty 2, Krueger 2.

Osseo 70, Prior Lake 67 OT

Behind 22 points from D.J. Hebert and 21 from Bridge Tusler, Osseo held off Prior Lake in overtime, 70-67, at the Breakdown Tip Off Classic in Minnetonka.

Osseo and Prior Lake have comparable talents in bigs (Carson Shanks and Ian Theisen), top-notch guards (Jon Sobaski and Bridge Tusler), and several working role players. For the first 12 minutes the score showed how comparable the two programs are. For one to separate somebody needed to step forward and that person was Matt Dysthe of Prior Lake.

Dysthe, a 5-foot-10 senior guard, changed the game with a pair of treys and 11 first-half points overall. The Lakers held a one point advantage before Jon Sobaski rotated a pass to Dysthe for a trey building a small advantage. Back the other way Osseo turned the ball over and Dysthe found himself with the ball and a two on one fast break advantage. Instead of making a play at the rim Matt pulled up and hit a third trey for a 31-24 lead.

In the second half the defense tightened up and when you have size like 7-footer Carson Shanks for Prior Lake and 6-foot-9 Ian Theisen for Osseo scoring around the cup gets even more complicated. Shanks and Theisen may not have had the big numbers in shot blocks but they contested a lot of shots and forced players to kick out or pull-up from further out. The size combined with team defense slowed the scoring way down.

With six minutes remaining and Osseo down 49-40, DJ Hebert caught ball rotations on consecutive possessions and hit two momentous three-point attempts. Two minutes later Hebert’s defense forced a Laker turnover and Osseo pushed the other way to get two free throw attempts. D.J. made both and Prior Lake’s lead with just one (49-48).

With Prior Lake rattled turnovers and quick shot attempts continued. Osseo was quick to take advantage with Thiesen jumping in the passing lane and going the other way for a dunk and then Bridge Tusler attacked the cup for a contested lay-in. Back the other way, Jack Harrison continued a steady performance for the Lakers with a score deep in the lane and Osseo’s lead was one at 52-51.

Down the stretch Sobaski attacked the rim and produced a ball fake that still has people confused on his way to a tying lay-in. Back the other way Sobaski’s defense forced Tusler into a difficult shot and the teams went to OT tied at 55.

In the extra session Hebert and Tusler attacked a worn down Laker defense with the dribble scoring twice each and building their lead to 68-64. However, Sobaski countered two of the scores with high rising three-point makes and the lead was just one. Down the stretch Hebert made key free throws and Sobaski missed a trey at the buzzer giving the Orioles a 70-67 victory.

Score by half: Osseo 27-28-15--70, Prior Lake 31-24-12--67

Osseo: Hebert 22, Tusler 21, Theisen 7, Bloom 5, Subah 4, Stromback 4, Brush 4, Gichaba 1.

Prior Lake: Sobaski 19, J. Harrison 14, Dysthe 14, Shanks 6, Kaiser 5, McPherson 4.

Braham 85, Orono 75

Braham showed it was a more-balanced team than many observers expected in an 85-75 victory over Orono at the Breakdown Tip Off Classic at Minnetonka. Four players scored in double figures, led by Tyler Vaughan's 28 points.

Is Braham a one man show? Not after two Tip-Off Classic performances and a jamboree win over St. Thomas. Early in the Bombers' game against defending Class AAA state champion Orono, the Bombers were evened up 24-24 with the Spartans. At that point Bomber superstar Tyler Vaughan had only scored one basket but rough and rugged post Cameron Braund put up five early field goals.

Just before the half Tyler hit his first trey of the game, scored in transition, and put in a penetrating lay-up. They took the lead at the break 39-35. From there the balance of the Bombers took over. Anthony Bias, Shawn Hollenkemp, and Sam Stigen each provided spurts of scoring production and Vaughan drained three second half treys (he scored 22 total points). A lead was built to 77-59 and the reserves finished the contest.

Orono’s Brady Wohler kept things interesting scoring in transition including two hammering dunks (finished with a game high 25). Teammate Anthonie Tholey had one of his better shooting performances knocking down a pair of treys for 17 points overall. The pair thinned the final outcome to 85-75 but it was Braham’s game the entire second half.

Tyler knocked down four treys meaning he’s just two three-point makes away from tying Jordan Smith’s (who graduated from Orono last year) state record for three-pointers made.

Score by half: Braham 39-46--85, Orono 35-40--75

Braham: Vaughan 28, Bias 14, Stigen 14, Braund 14, Hollenkamp 9, Dahlman 4, Klemz 2.

Orono: Wohler 25, Tholey 17, Borgert 10, Duxbury 10, Hammer 5, Carlson 4, Horner 4, Huessner 3, Gardner-Ostrum 2, Anderson 2.

Roseville 77, Rocori 52

In the opening game of the Breakdown Tip Off Classic at Minnetonka High School, Roseville rolled out to a 77-52 victory over Rocori, led by 29 points from junior Mackenzie Johnson.

Roseville jumped out to a quick lead on the hot shooting hand of its 6-foot junior off-guard, Mack Johnson. Coach Ted Critchley had Johnson catching and hitting off of Raider penetration and Johnson was running off screens with every possession.

To make matters worse, Rocori doesn’t have a true point guard nor do they have much speed and players like Emeche Wells, Logan Brown, Kobe Critchley, and Collin Johnson took advantage all over the court. Johnson and Brown put on full court pressure that produced easy lay-ups and the penetration of all the guards led to either open treys/jumpers for Johnson or lay-ups in the middle. Simply put, the quickness and talent of having guards pushed Roseville to the big early 18-point advantage.

Rocori is just two weeks removed from a state football championship so their players have had a week’s less practice and it definitely showed. Most of the basketball team double as football players and are the size of fullbacks, linebackers, ends, and lineman. With the Raider line-up including several basketball “specialists” that week of extra practice was apparent.

Johnson led Roseville with 29 points while fellow junior Jordan Burich totaled 10. For Rocori, Jonah Eisenschenk scored 25 (11 of 13 from the free throw line) using his muscular upper body combined with one-dribble separation moves to get clean looks at the rim.

Score by half: Roseville 40-37--77, Rocori 26-26--52

Roseville: M. Johnson 29, Burich 10, C. Johnson 7, Wells 7, Hall 6, Brown 6, Critchley 5, Perra 3, Smith 2, Joyer 1.

Rocori: Eisenschenk 25, Meyer 9, Mueller 6, Palmer 4, Hennen 3, Terres 3, Thorpe 2.
