Hopkins at Wayzata
7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 13

Wayzata ended a 24-year, 55-game losing streak to Hopkins last season, and the Trojans aim to add another win over their rival when hosting the Royals on Friday.

Wayzata sits atop the Lake Conference standings, and with a win, the Trojans can not only strengthen their hold on first place but also improve upon last year’s upset by dealing Hopkins its second league loss this season.

Back-to-back wins over No. 5-4A Park Center (59-54) and Cretin-Derham Hall (86-70) in the St. Thomas Invitational in late December propelled Wayzata to No. 4 in the Class 4A rankings. The Trojans (9-0, 1-0) also pulled out a 75-74 overtime win over No. 9-4A Eden Prairie to take the top spot in the conference standings.

Ryan Lindberg (17.2 ppg) and Gavin Baumgartner (15.2 ppg) have led Wayzata through a tough schedule.

The No. 7-4A Royals (9-2, 0-1) fell to Edina earlier this season, opening up the league title race. Ishmael El-Amin (22.9 ppg) didn’t play against the Hornets, but he should be in the starting lineup against the Trojans.
