Monticello has a tendency to struggle offensively when guards Thomas Schyma and Matt Todd aren’t producing. That wasn’t the case Wednesday afternoon.

Carter Hangsleben and Isaiah Wills picked up their main scoring threats, combining for 27 points and leading the Magic to a 60-55 victory over Chisago Lakes in the Class 3A quarterfinals at Williams Arena.

“Over the last few weeks we’ve had other kids step up,” Monticello coach Jason Schmidt said. “They are looking to capitalize on their opportunities, and taking advantage of them.”

Hangsleben finished with 14 points while Wills added 13. They entered the game averaging 11 points between them.

“This is the best game the two of them have had together,” Schmidt said. “They came up with some big shots for us today.”

Schyma and Todd average nearly 33 points between them. Schyma finished with 10 while Todd had eight, to go along with six assists and five steals.

“My role is to be a spark, and I embrace it,” Wills said. He was 4-for-8 from the floor, 3-for-6 from three-point range.

Senior center Dylan Wood had 17 points for Chisago Lakes (22-7), leading three players in double figures. The Wildcats defeated Monticello 51-48 during the regular season.

“We didn’t finish against them in the first game,” Schmidt said. “We were able to finish today.”

Monticello (20-10) will be next in line to try and halt top-ranked DeLaSalle (22-4), which is making a run for a fifth consecutive title.
